It's not every day you hear the word "jive" in a podcast. In fact, unless you're hanging out with jazz musicians of a certain vintage, it's probably not any day that you hear it at all. Is the world ready for a Jive Renaissance? Don't leave out the jive cognates "jivey" and "jive-ass". If Cuomo had called Mamdani a jive-ass nepo baby, would he have fared any better? We'll never know. Seems like more of a Curtis Sliwa move anyway. Good to see the hellcats back at it.

Your assessment of Mamdani as being outside of Asian American striver culture is spot-on. The guy gives off a lot more "Kumar" vibes rather than "Harold" vibes.
By contrast, Andrew Yang is much closer to the AA striver model.
Asian striver culture is good, for the strivers and society. Society is enriched with many professionals contributing, whether in science, music, medicine or whatever. And people who grew up poor or lower middle class become rich, at least relatively speaking.
I first learned to mispronounce “tranche” during my failed attempt to understand structured finance during the Great Recession. You know, those things… “collateralized debt obligations” that get sliced and diced. I dunno, obviously I’m not one of those Asian striver people. My folks were here before immigrants were invented, which occurred when the first federal immigration bureaucracy was established by the Immigration Act of 1882.
With that out of the way, I was 100% rooting for the Asians in the recent controversy involving the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, which consistently ranks among the nation’s best magnet schools, or best any schools. I don’t know how much press it was getting nationwide — Sarah maybe followed it since she lives in greater DC, right? — but Fairfax County, its constituent area, is about 23% Asian and they made up over 70% of the school’s population. Well gee, people who work hard and do their homework gravitate to the top institutions. Whodathunkit? The Board of Supervisors decided that it was insufficiently reflective of the county’s demographics so they established tranches for underrepresented populations. Asian parents sued the county, unsuccessfully. The appropriate battle cry in these dust-ups should be, “Remember CCNY!” (Too much to go into here but look up City College of New York and what happened when they went to open admissions in 1968. If you can’t make it, break it.)

I agreed with Sarah regarding the word Pedo - tho, the practice among elites is historical and far too common and does need to be brought to mainstream light (see "The Franklin Scandal"). Along the same lines, I find the over and mis use of the word "rape" similarly offensive when well meaning use it in context of environmental abuse etc. Its lessens the power and meaning of the word for sure.
